The First Nuit Blanche in Taipei
On Sunday, October 1, 2016, Taipei hosted its first ever Nuit Blanche. What is this festival, and why does it have a French name? Let’s take a look!
The Origins of Nuit Blanche
An art director named Jean Blaise first came up withthe idea for Nuit Blanche, or “White Night”, when the mayor of Paris asked him to create an all-night public festival of art in 2002. Works of art were placed throughoutthe city, and museums, art galleries, and other attractions were open all night. The purpose was to make art more accessible and to encourage people to explore their own city.

Nuit Blache 2016 in Taipei
Since Taipei was the World Design Capital in 2016, it was suitable for the city to organize a Nuit Blanche festival. The celebration was held in a large area including National Taiwan Museum, North Gate, and Dadaocheng. Many people in the crowd wore costumes as they enjoyed art installations and light displays on the sides of buildings. The Office of the President was open to visitors at night for the first time ever. However, some people complained that the festival ended around midnight, even though it is supposed to go all night.
